Mobile app or website: which one is right for your project?

Published on May 20, 2026· 2 min read· Nathan Reix

"I need an app!" is something we hear a lot. But in half of cases, a well-built website meets the need better — faster, and for less. Before you dive in, here's how to decide between a mobile app and a website based on your project and your users.

The website: accessible everywhere, no install

A website (or web application) runs in the browser, on any device, with nothing to install. It's instantly accessible through a simple link, by anyone.

It's ideal when:

  • you want to reach the widest possible audience;
  • your service is used occasionally (booking, information, purchase);
  • you want to be present online with no install friction.

It's also the fastest and most affordable solution to deploy, and the easiest to evolve.

The mobile app: native experience and engagement

A native mobile app (iOS and Android) is installed from the stores. It offers a smoother experience, access to phone features (camera, GPS, sensors), offline use and, above all, push notifications — a powerful retention lever.

It's justified when:

  • your users come back regularly (daily or weekly use);
  • you need native features or offline access;
  • engagement and retention are core to your model.

In return, it requires more development, publication on the stores and maintenance across two platforms — so a higher budget.

The middle ground: the PWA

Between the two, the Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that installs like an app and works offline, without going through the stores. It's often an excellent compromise to launch quickly, with some of the benefits of a native app.

How to choose?

Ask the right question: how often will your users come back?

  • Occasional use, wide audience → website.
  • Regular use, need for engagement and native features → mobile app.

When in doubt, starting with a website (or a PWA) lets you validate your idea quickly, then invest in a mobile app once the need is confirmed. A well-designed architecture lets the project evolve without rebuilding everything.

In short

The website favours reach and accessibility; the mobile app favours experience and retention. The right choice depends on your users and how often they'll use it — not on the trend. What matters most is a custom solution, fast and built to last.
